It does a pretty good job of cleaning up iPhone images etc. The plug-in extension automates some of the features in the main program such as smart lighting, clear view etc. I’d have hoped it might be free for registered users but not so. One other interesting spin-off of all of this is that DXO will also sell you a plug-in to Apple Photos. I’m surprised at that but don’t feel inclined to test the theory at the moment. They claim their corrections are far superior to the ones built in to the body.

If they are left on the software will double correct. According to DXO turn off all lens correction and vignetting correction in the camera body and let DXO handle it. Interestingly, I had a conversation with DXO regarding wether or not one should apply auto lens corrections in the camera body, rather than have the software do the correction.

Makes me wonder if it’s even worth for example spending an extra £1000 for the 1.4 version over the 1.8 version on say the Nikkor 85mm. The spooky up side of this is that now even crummy lenses start to look as good as the expensive pro glass. One area where DXO Optics Pro really scores it the amount of work DXO has done via it’s testing arm of the business building up a database of lens information and giving it the ability to automatically correct for lens distortion, aberrations and vignetting.

This also makes the files far more portable between machines, rather than have to port over large database files, just move the folder with the original and side-car’s. The editing is not-destructive, it just creates a small side-car file in the same folder as the originals which contains all of the adjustments. I know DXO works as a plug-in to Lightroom and I’d imagine it works well in that capacity, it does beg the question is it far enough advanced to actually make you use it day to day over the native Lightroom tools? As a stand alone, as I use it all works well. About all you can do is to mark, rate and that’s about it. Aperture did it well and I understand Lightroom does as well. What DXO Optics Pro isn’t so good at is the day to day management of images. DXO also puts especially my MacBook pro, now aged under some strain, the fans run up and I have to put the cooling half wine corks under the rear edge to help it on it’s way. When speed is still really of the essence then Aperture is my still my go-to app. Who wants to be tweaking each shot one by one anyway when it’s late and images are needed asap. In my opinion DXO probably does the best job of getting the most out of RAW files especially without too much work on behalf of the user.

The headline improvements are a four times faster implementation of the de-noising features, and spot weighted, face detecting contrast adjusting module. Both corrections are very effective and convincing.īack to DXO Optics Pro. The latter is a comprehensive way of correcting architectural convergence and volumetric distortions. The former is a great way of applying retro, convincing film looks and effects. In no particular order: Blackmagic Da Vinci Resolve 12, Final Cut Pro X, Aperture and DXO Optics and it’s siblings, DXO FilmPack and DXO ViewPoint.

There are a few pieces of software I really don’t feel I can do without in my work.

I’ve been happy with V10 but there are worthwhile reasons to upgrade to V11. I stumbled across it on an infrequent visit to DXO’s site. Now, However, Show me an upgrade to DXO Optics Pro and I’ll again flash the plastic. Then that all went wrong and I don’t even use Photoshop any more. Once upon a time… If you showed me an upgrade to Photoshop I’d show you my credit card.
